- Qualities of a good map: - key or legend, scale, direction (North point), title, border or frame-the importance of each quality
- CONVENTIONAL SYMBOLS used on large scale maps to show church, school, vegetation, roads;
- Conventional colours used in atlases to show water and relief
- Interpret simple relief and land use features on a map
- Give the direction of one place from another using the 16 POINTS OF THE COMPASS
- Simple treatment of bearing e.g. stating the direction of one place from another in degrees
- SCALES - the types and use: linear scale (calculate distances using the scale of a map)
- Simple calculations using linear scale and direction
- Draw the classroom to scale - use of linear scale to draw buildings or rooms-simple map making and interpretation e.g. land use
